Deer Antler Dog Chew, Which Type To Choose?

We sell two types, split or whole dog antlers.

Split, are the easier version alternative to the whole version, they are just cut in half. An ideal choice for less aggressive chewers or dogs like our Barney who just cannot be interested in hard chewing treats.

They are very functional and help clear plaque from dog’s teeth, they are very much like a butchers bone. With the marrowbone exposed, they are a much easier to chew.

Both whole and split are a 100% natural Chew. These are the whole hardest to chew version.

They are fully encased with the shell, so they should be a major challenge even for a pet that likes hard chew products. A good choice for an aggressive chewer. Definitely not one for Barney!

Whole Red Deer Antlers For Dogs

These are a hard to chew treat, whole are more suitable for aggressive chewers who love to chew. The incentive with a whole version is to get to the marrowbone inside, a bit like the marrowbone in butchers bones, which canines really enjoy. They are hard work for your pet to get to the reward, if they like a good chew, they will truly like these! Split Deer antlers are the easier to chew version for a canine that may simply get bored trying to get into a whole one. For canines, the inner part of the antlers is the part they want to get to. In easy halves, Split give easy access to the marrowbone centre and will be much easier than the whole but dogs love them. Dogs and puppies are more likely to be interested in the half or split ones because the hard work has been done! If your dog is a real chewer, they will probably finish the split antlers much quicker than a whole antler. Whole are more long lasting

Antlers for Dogs, Where Do They Come From?

In the spring, the old deer antlers die off and eventually fall off the skull of the Deer, and are gradually replaced with a new growth. This happens every year, deer antlers are the fastest growing bone tissue on any animal! Our suppliers have people who go to the forests to collect them. They are then taken back to the supplier where they are cleaned, and they use steam to disinfect them. Then they are cut to the right length of size and thoroughly sanded to remove any sharp points and edges. They pay special attention to this last stage because it directly affects the quality of the product. The first time you purchase an Antler dog chew, choosing the size of the antler chew can be a bit difficult. It is definitely worth taking a ruler and trying to visualize whether the length of a given size will not be too small or too large for your canines mouth.

Red Deer Antler for Dogs, What Size Should I Get?

The main thing is that the antler is not too small, your dog may try to swallow it whole, as this would be dangerous. But if it is a little too big, then the dog will probably be fine. I have seen a small dog work their way through a large size antler. You should always supervise your pet with ANY bone like dog treats – remove any broken pieces. NOT suitable for puppies under 9 months.
